Using AI to help wartorn pets find their way home
Since Russia invaded, approximately 7 million Ukrainians have sought refuge abroad. Mainstream media have covered the human toll of the war, but very few discuss the devastating impact on the millions of pets left behind. Because of the scale of displacement, we partnered with PetNow, a company using the latest AI technology that allows anyone with a mobile phone to scan and ID lost pets in order to reunite them with their families.
What We Did
- Working with pet brand Purina, along with the U-Hearts Foundation, PETA, Four Paws and Petnow, a company specializing in AI-driven biometric identification for animals, we created PetAid Ukraine, a mobile app that helps displaced pets find their way home. Using the app, anyone can 3D scan a pet and upload it to a database of lost animals.
- Mobile app that uses camera to do a 3D scan of the animal and submit it to a centralized database
- Predictive AI modeling that compares pre-war maps to post-war maps to show areas where pets might have been or fled to.
- 99% accurate facial and feature recognition that can alert in real-time once an animal has been seen through someone’s mobile or through our drone cameras.
- Drones outfitted with our facial recognition software can explore areas humans may not be able to go to including the frontlines.
- Setting up our command center in Kiev, Ukraine where we coordinate pet supply distribution centers as well as housing for pet rescues across the country.
