According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Africa has the highest rate of mosquito-borne Malaria, accounting for 94% of all cases. Roughly 80% of the villages affected reside near bodies of standing or slow-moving water–Malaria-bearing mosquitos’ prime breeding ground. And while some action is taken to combat this issue, most only try to kill the mosquitos after they’re fully grown.
The Insight
Many African villagers use these same waterways to clean their laundry by hand. What if we turned this daily ritual into a powerful tool to save lives by preventing the spread of Malaria?
The Solution
Together with world health officials and mosquito experts, Method, a leading cleaning supply company, created Clean Killer: a first-of-its-kind laundry detergent that kills Malaria-carrying mosquito larvae before they hatch. With every wash, it disperses an eco-friendly, nontoxic and biodegradable mosquito control agent, through these waterways, actively killing off larvae. Working closely with local and regional officials, we will distribute this detergent to over 1000 villages in the most heavily affected regions.
